PEiD

PEiD is an open-source Windows program that will allow you to easily identify packers and compilers in PE files. With this lightweight tool, you can detect over 600 different signatures without having to resort to other more complex programming mechanisms.

Different scanning modes

In PEiD, you'll find three scanning modes to analyze executable files in Windows with ease. More specifically, the normal mode will allow you to check the file entry point for documented signatures quickly. The Deep mode will extend the search to the contents of the entry point section to enhance the detection of modified or encrypted files. Finally, with the Hardcore mode, you'll perform a full scan of the file to identify any complex modifications. However, this last process may be slower and may generate less accurate results due to small signatures repeated in multiple files.

Take advantage of specialized modules

PEiD has a task manager, a fast disassembler and a HEX viewer. All these tools, built into the program by default, will make it even easier for you to analyze executable files on your PC. In addition to this, the tool offers heuristic scanning options and a system of plugins such as Generic OEP Finder and Krypto ANALyzer.
